The Nelson Adventure Speaker Series is pleased to announce that mountain historian and award-winning author Bernadette McDonald will be visiting Nelson to promote her new book, Alpine Rising: Sherpas, Baltis, and the Triumph of Local Climbers in the Greater Ranges.
Bernadette will speak on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 7pm at the Prestige Lakeside Resort, located at 701 Lakeside Drive. Doors will open at 6:15pm. Alpine Rising is the first comprehensive history of the contributions of Sherpas and other local climbers to high-altitude mountaineering, on Everest and beyond. The ground-breaking book launches March 1 in North America, with translated editions publishing simultaneously in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, South Korea, Spain, and Slovenia.
During her Nelson appearance, Bernadette will present photos and share anecdotes from Alpine Rising, which took three years to complete. As the founding Vice President of Mountain Culture at the Banff Centre (including serving as the director of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival for 20 years), Bernadette had unprecedented access to historical records to write this book, as well as to the world’s most accomplished alpinists and their descendants.
Alpine Rising is already being heralded as an essential read for mountain culture enthusiasts; one that will forever change the way we see the history and legacy of mountaineering in the Greater Ranges.
Notably, A Book Lover’s Emporium, will be onsite selling books at the event. Bernadette will sign books immediately following her presentation.
