Nelson’s top 13 to 15 year old hockey players are celebrating a big tournament win, just one month before they host the top nine Bantam teams in the province.

The Nelson Leafs, a Tier Three team, defied oddsmakers this past weekend by beating four teams from across BC and Alberta – all of them in Tier Two – before defeating their West Kootenay rivals, the Trail Smoke Eaters, in the final of the Penticton Minor Hockey Tier Two Bantam Tournament this past weekend.

The Leafs faced off against a handful of very competitive squads, including the Kelowna/West Kelowna Rockets, the St. Albert, AB Raiders, the Prince George Cougars and the Calgary Buffalo Blackhawks. “The Calgary team had their own trainer, massage table and chartered a Dash 8 flight from Calgary,” says Leafs coach Pete Quinn, “that’s a little different mindset than our boys. We’re a meat and potatoes team.”

Nelson defeated the Trail Smoke Eaters 8 – 3 in the final. “It’s a super important win,” says Quinn, “it was some high quality hockey. This weekend was a building block for the provincials”.

Nelson hosts the 2017/18 British Columbia Bantam Tier Three Hockey Championships, from March 18 – 22. Tourney organizers are still looking for volunteers and financial support from Nelson businesses. Volunteers will be required to assist with individual team hosting, score clock and penalty box operation, hospitality room operation, baked good provision and more. Interested? Contact the Tournament’s volunteer organizer, Shelann Andersen by email or call 250-777-4030.

Businesses looking to support the event have a variety of sponsorship opportunities. They can contact fundraising co-ordinators Melissa Surina by calling 250-353-1499,  email or Greg Proctor at 250-354-9432 or email
