November 5, 2024 marked the final beach cleanup of the season at the popular Nelson Lakeside Dog Walk, an event organized by the Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FoKLSS). The cleanup, held on a crisp fall afternoon, brought together volunteers and community members, who all rolled up their sleeves to help keep Nelson’s cherished lakeside area clean and vibrant.
During the two-hour event, volunteers collected an impressive amount of litter including plastics, cans, metal debris, an old TV set, and other waste items that could potentially harm local wildlife and pollute the lake. The successful cleanup effort was part of FoKLSS’s ongoing commitment to fostering environmental stewardship and protecting the natural beauty of the Kootenay Lake area.
“It’s inspiring living in a community like Nelson,” said Lily Feeback, Beach Cleanup Coordinator at FoKLSS. “Although the Dog Walk had less litter than anticipated, each volunteer put in a thorough effort to ensure every little piece of trash was found. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us and I’m excited to see the regulars again in the spring!”
This event concludes a series of seasonal cleanups organized by FoKLSS, who have come back strong after a hiatus at the beginning of the year with a significant impact on reducing waste and plans for promoting conservation throughout the Kootenay Lake area. With the beach cleanup season officially over, FoKLSS is already looking forward to planning more stewardship events in the spring.
