The popular Kaslo and Area Edible Garden Tour is back this summer after a 3 year ‘pandemic’ hiatus! Mark your calendars for July 14 from 10:00am to 3:00pm. This year’s tour is a collaborative effort between Kaslo Community Services, Kaslo Community Garden Society and North Kootenay Lake Arts Council and is is a fundraiser for the Kaslo Food Hub.
The tour offers participants self-guided tours through unique food producing gardens where they can see firsthand many effective and efficient ways to produce food in small spaces like your very own yard. This year’s tour features different kinds of greenhouses, firesmart plantings, rot-resistant raised beds, espaliered fruit trees, permaculture principles, backyard chickens, different composting systems and more. Please no pets!
There are 10 gardens you can visit between 10am and 3pm. Local poets are invited to tie garden poetry in the Community Garden for us all to enjoy. The Arts Council will have local visual art on display at one of the gardens, and will have musician Jeremy Taylor playing his brand of snappy acoustic folk from 2pm onwards to close out the tour.

In addition, the Edible Garden Tour will begin with a Soil Analysis Workshop at the Community Garden with Sheila Roberts and Tom Satterly at 9:00am. Participants will work in partners to analyze a soil sample they bring from their own garden. The cost is $10.00, attendance is limited and registration is required: email kfsp@kaslo.services
On July 5th there will be a Soil Development Workshop at the Community Garden from 9:00 to 10:00am. This workshop will focus on using available material to add nutrients and tilth to your soil. Presenters are; Lorraine Symmes, Patrick Steiner and Anne Heard. Bring a donation for the Food Cupboard, a comfy chair and join us in the garden. Please not pets.
