Renowned Canadian, and locally trained, singer-songwriter, Stephen Fearing and the Danish group, The Sentimentals, are appearing together on Thursday March 19 7:30 pm at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson.
Yip Harpburg, an American popular song lyricist {‘Over the Rainbow’, ‘Paper Moon’) wrote: “Words make you think a thought; music makes you feel a feeling; songs make you feel a thought.”This describes well the impact that Fearing’s words, music and songs—his stories—have been having on audiences for over three decades.
“Being called a storyteller is one of the best compliments I’ve ever received. I love telling stories, but it wasn’t until I realized that my story is just a small part of ‘The Story’ that I found my true voice as a songwriter,” says Fearing. “Writing songs means opening to the emotions and experiences of others, as well as my own. That’s what inspired the new album’s title,
The Empathist; these songs are all based on the truths I’ve seen and felt around me.”
Since 2018, Fearing and The Sentimentals have lit up stages across Europe and Canada, delivering performances across Europe and Canada defined by a blend of masterful song-writing and intricate musicianship. The Danish musicians have an extraordinary ability to reimagine and elevate Fearing’s seasoned material. Their partnership with Fearing seamlessly weaves traditional roots influences with subtle experimentation, resulting in performances and recordings that are both emotionally stirring and artistically ground-breaking.
Fearing’s thirteenth solo album will be released on March 1. Another local connection of note—several of the its songs were written in Nelson in during a writing retreat in early 2023.
